Kelly Reichardt’s First Cow Trailer

A24 had a pretty fantastic 2019, having released such acclaimed films as The Farewell, Midsommar, The Lighthouse and Uncut Gems (the latter of which also set a new opening weekend record for the company). This year is looking to be more of the same with upcoming films from directors like Sofia Coppola, David Lowery and Mike Mills on the docket, but their first release of the year will be a new movie from Kelly Reichardt (Wendy and Lucy). First Cow is based on a novel by Jonathan Raymond (who also co-wrote the script) and it revolves around a cook (John Magaro) who travels west with a group of fur trappers in Oregon Territory and befriends a Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee). It seems like another quiet study of the nineteenth century American West in the vein of Meek’s Cutoff (which, as it turns out, Raymond also wrote), although the novel supposedly has a second narrative set in 1980 as well and it is unclear if that is also a part of the movie. First Cow co-stars Toby Jones, Ewen Bremner, Alia Shawkat and Rene Auberjonois and it hits select theatres on March 6th; check out the trailer below and see what you think.
