New Power Rangers Reboot in the Works

Although it seemed at the time like ’90s nostalgia would guarantee the success of a newly relaunched Power Rangers movie franchise, Lionsgate’s 2017 big screen reboot ultimately failed to attract much of an audience. It earned just $142 million worldwide, which is pretty terrible for a movie based on one of the most recognizable, longest-running live-action TV shows out there. But last year Hasbro acquired the rights to the Power Rangers brand from Saban with the thought that the property has not yet reached its full potential. Now they are teaming up with Paramount for a new movie and they have recruited an interesting up-and-coming director to helm it. Hit the jump for more info.
According to Variety, Paramount Pictures is in early negotiations with Jonathan Entwistle to direct a new Power Rangers movie. Entwistle is best known for creating the dark comedy series The End of the F***ing World, which aired on Channel 4 in the U.K. and Netflix internationally. The script was written by Patrick Burleigh (Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway).
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers debuted back in 1993 and since then it has run for over 25 seasons and almost 900 episodes, albeit in many different incarnations. THR is reporting that the new movie will “involve a time-travel element that brings the kids to the 1990s.” Sounds like they will be doubling down on the ’90s nostalgia this time around.
