VHYes Trailer: A Found Footage Retro Comedy Shot on VHS

The found footage horror subgenre has gone kind of quiet over the last few years, particularly with franchises like Paranormal Activity taking a hiatus, but here’s an interesting little film that applies the aesthetic to a sketch comedy concept not unlike UHF. Directed by Jack Henry Robbins (the son of Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, who also appear in the movie), VHYes is a movie actually shot entirely on VHS and tells the story of a young kid who gets a camcorder for Christmas in 1987 and starts recording his own home-made movies over top of his parents’ wedding video. Along the way, he also learns to record from TV, adding ’80s commercials and late night TV clips into the mix while in the background his parents’ marriage starts to break down. Clearly this seems inspired by things like Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! and Too Many Cooks, but the added layer of a story threaded through the madness is somewhat unique. VHYes arrives in select theatres on Jan. 17th; check out the trailer below and see what you think.
