The universal appeal and staying power of holiday classic Home Alone continues to amaze and once again this year it has been a topic of conversation thanks in part to an episode of Netflix’s The Movies That Made Us. There have been several sequels over the years but only one of them stars Macaulay Culkin; the others are primarily made-for-TV fodder. Now that Disney has acquired the rights to this franchise, however, they are looking to revive it once again for their Disney+ streaming service. A new Home Alone movie is in the works and they have recently started the casting process with several recognizable stars signing on for the reboot. Hit the jump to find out what we know.

According to Deadline, Jojo Rabbit‘s Archie Yates has signed on to star in a new version of Home Alone along with Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and Rob Delaney (Catastrophe). The movie is being directed by Dan Mazer (Dirty Grandpa) from a script by SNL writers Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell. It will be not be a theatrical release and instead Disney is aiming to have it hit Disney+ in time for the holidays of 2020.

The project is being emphasized as a “reimagining” with Variety reporting that Yates will not play a new version of Kevin McAllister while Kemper and Delaney most likely will not be his parents either. This seems to coincide with details provided by Collider back in August that the new movie would “follow a husband and wife who go to war with a young boy who has stolen something from them.” That sounds like a pretty strange divergence from the original story, but given the affection many people have for the original, perhaps a straight up remake would have been an uphill battle anyway. Are you looking forward to seeing Home Alone reimagined for a new generation?
