Joe Johnston in Talks for Honey I Shrunk the Kids Reboot

It was being reported earlier this year that Disney was contemplating a reboot of their 1989 film Honey I Shrunk the Kids, which starred Rick Moranis as a scientist who accidentally shrinks his kids to a quarter of an inch, sending them on a dangerous adventure through their backyard. The movie was one of the highest grossing movies of 1989 and spawned two sequels and a TV series, but the franchise has been dormant since the show ended in 2000. Now they are planning a new movie with the help of Frozen‘s Josh Gad and this week we are hearing that original film’s director Joe Johnston may be returning to helm it. Hit the jump for more details.
According to Variety, Joe Johnston is in negotiations to direct Disney’s upcoming Honey I Shrunk the Kids reboot. The movie is tentatively titled Shrunk and will star Josh Gad as Nick, the son of Rick Moranis’ character (played by Robert Oliveri in the original) who has also become a scientist only to repeat his father’s mistake. The screenplay is being written by Todd Rosenberg, who previously penned the Black List script All My Life.
Although the original plan was to produce the reboot for Disney+, the latest draft supposedly has Disney execs excited enough to plan a theatrical release instead. The project still does not yet have an official greenlight, however. Johnston most recently directed reshoots on Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, earning him a co-directing credit, but prior to that he helmed Captain America: The First Avenger for Marvel. Are you looking forward to Shrunk?
