After spending over a decade in development hell, it is starting to feel like Sony’s Uncharted movie may finally have a real shot at getting made very soon. The project gained a new director a couple of months ago in the form of Travis Knight (Bumblebee), marking the sixth filmmaker to officially come on board. Tom Holland signed on to play Nathan Drake a couple of years ago after they decided to go with a younger version of the character, but up until now there had been very little talk about who might play his mentor and best friend, Sully. Now this week we are hearing that Sully may end up being played by someone who was once up for the role of Nathan Drake. Hit the jump for more details.
According to Variety, Mark Wahlberg is in final talks to play Victor “Sully” Sullivan in the Uncharted movie. It is true that Wahlberg was circling the role of Nathan Drake back when David O. Russell was supposed to direct, but of course, that was also before they opted for a younger take. In the video games, Sully is in his late ’50s / early ’60s but is generally believed to be about 25 years older than Drake, which is exactly the age difference between Holland and Wahlberg.
Putting age aside, the more important question is whether Holland and Wahlberg will have decent chemistry with each other. Hopefully this isn’t being seen as just a rehash of the Peter Parker / Tony Stark dynamic as part of the fun of Uncharted comes from Drake and Sully verbally sparring with each other. The latest draft of the script is written by Rafe Judkins (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Division), building on the original draft written by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man). Does this news make you more or less excited for an Uncharted movie?
