Sonic the Hedgehog Trailer #2

sonic

After the fan uproar surrounding the initial design of Paramount’s upcoming CG animated Sonic the Hedgehog, the studio went back to the drawing board to come up with a slightly less creepy version of the beloved video game icon. This week we are getting our first official look at the redesign in a brand new trailer and it definitely looks less “realistic”, more cartoony and generally more in line with the Sonic we’ve come to know over the years. Of course, that doesn’t mean the movie itself looks any better, but at least it won’t be giving people nightmares which is probably a good thing. Directed by Jeff Fowler, the movie stars Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic himself. Sonic the Hedgehog hits theatres on Feb. 14th; check out the new trailer below and let us know what you think.

I hope they hired that viz-artist who did that fan-mock-up to do the re-design, it looks exactly like that. Also, looks like they did some script rewrites too, now the power surge is caused by sonic playing lonely baseball with himself.

Regardless if this is still a terrible movie, it is interesting to see a studio commit to making these kind of changes so late after getting negative feedback from a trailer. It certainly looks like they took these changes seriously.

Why change the design of your movie’s main character if your movie is still a steaming pile?

Although I like how they have the little Jojo Rabbit tie-in with the song Blitzkrieg Bop, which is about the Nazi tactic of “lightning war”. A choice lyric from the song: “Hey ho, let’s go, Shoot ‘em in the back now, What they want, I don’t know, They’re all revved up and ready to go.” The children are going to love it.
