Monday Morning Box Office Report: Midway Ambushes Doctor Sleep

boxofficemidway

It was a surprise victory for Roland Emmerich’s Midway at the box office over the weekend as the war movie earned $17.5 million, propelling it past Mike Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep to take the #1 spot. Going into the weekend, it was expected that Doctor Sleep would win without too much trouble but Veteran’s Day audiences gave Midway a bit of a boost while Doctor Sleep did not become the must-see event that WB was hoping for. The Stephen King movie earned just $14 million, which is about $10 million off expectations and also $10 million less than what Pet Sematary earned earlier this year. It is possible that the ties to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining in the marketing campaign actually worked against it, scaring away younger audiences who were not familiar with the iconic 1980 film. In third place, Playing with Fire also surprised with $12.8 million, proving John Cena’s drawing power, while Last Christmas opened in fourth with $11.6 million. Elsewhere Terminator: Dark Fate fell from first to fifth, dropping 63% from its disappointing debut. Joker fell out of the top 5 for the first time since its release but is expected to cross $1 billion in the next week or so.
