Netflix is already getting a fair bit of awards season buzz with their upcoming releases The Irishman and Marriage Story, but there is one more Netflix Original to add to that discussion. The Two Popes is directed by Fernando Meirelles (City of God) and adapted by Anthony McCarten (Darkest Hour, Bohemian Rhapsody) from his own play and it stars Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict XVI and Jonathan Pryce as Cardinal Bergoglio. The movie is based on the true story of how Bergoglio was chosen to become Pope Benedict’s successor despite his criticism of the current state of the Catholic Church. The trailer doesn’t do a great job of selling it but it seems to revolve primarily around conversations between the pair and it was a big hit coming out of Telluride with many critics calling it surprisingly funny and emotional. The Two Popes hits select theatres on Nov. 29th before arriving on Netflix on Dec. 20th; check out the trailer below and see what you think.
