Colin Farrell in Talks to Play Penguin in The Batman, Andy Serkis to Play Alfred

When the news broke last month that Paul Dano would be playing the Riddler in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, we knew that there was another villain role still yet to be cast. Jonah Hill was originally being courted to play the Penguin and now this week it looks like Warner Brothers is zeroing in on another somewhat surprising choice for that role: Colin Farrell. We are also hearing that Andy Serkis might play Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s butler and trusted confidant. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Deadline, Colin Farrell is in negotiations to play Osward Cobblepot aka The Penguin in the upcoming DC movie The Batman. No other details were immediately available but the character was last played on screen by Danny DeVito in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns back in 1992. It is unclear if they are going for a different take on the character but in the Batman: Arkham video games they gave him a Cockney accent and I can’t help but wonder if that is a possibility here.

The Wrap first reported on the news that Andy Serkis was in talks to play Alfred, a character previously portayed by such actors as Michael Gough, Michael Caine and Jeremy Irons (among others). While I’m sure he will do a fine job with this role, as some people have already pointed out, it almost seems like he would have been the more logical choice for Penguin. Serkis and Farrell will join a cast that already includes Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon and Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman. What do you think about these latest casting possibilities?
