BBC’s A Christmas Carol Trailer Starring Guy Pearce

achristmascarol

Every couple of years we are destined to get a new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol around the holiday season and this year the BBC has recruited a very interesting creative team and cast to turn it into a three-part mini-series. Guy Pearce plays Ebenezer Scrooge in what appears to be one of the darker versions of this story we’ve seen to date, written and produced by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, Locke). Ridley Scott is also listed as an executive producer along with Tom Hardy, who is apparently attached in a mystery role as well. Stephen Graham, Andy Serkis, Joe Alwyn, Vinette Robinson and Jason Flemyng also star. Between this, Dracula and War of the Worlds, the BBC seems to be in the habit of revisiting classic stories as of late. A Christmas Carol will arrive on the BBC in the U.K. and FX in the U.S. sometime this December; check out the first trailer below and let us know what you think.

I wanted to like it, but it just didn’t catch my interest.

The best adaptation by far is the Albert Finney musical version Scrooge! I am not usually a fan of musicals, but that version is so funny, and heartbreaking, and back to funny, it’s amazing. Every year I try to get friends or family to watch it, and they always avoid it. I get it. Being another version of A Christmas Carol and being a musical is two strikes against it, but I’m telling you, it’s a goddamn classic.

Fully agree with all of your points. Albert Finney was perfection. And he was only 34 years old !!!!

Devan, have you seen Fiddler on the Roof?

It’s another musical where the tone varies and the lead, Chaim Topol, is on par with Albert Finney’s role. In fact, both films have many similarities that I don’t want to spoil for you.

You know, I’m actually not sure if I’ve ever seen it all the way through. Don’t think so. I had a nephew that was obsessed with it for a while, when he was like 6 or 7. He would watch and quote it constantly (his current obsession is Godzilla movies of old). I do remember that Lazerwolf (spl?) if one of the coolest character names ever.

I’ll have to check it out.
