Peyton Reed Will Return to Direct Ant-Man 3

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That seems to be Marvel’s general stance these days when it comes to the directors for their various MCU films, although that wasn’t always the case. This week we are hearing that Peyton Reed has signed on to direct a third Ant-Man movie and, depending on the release schedule, he will likely be the first filmmaker to helm three successive movies in a row for the same character. It is not yet known where Ant-Man 3 will fall but it is expected to hit theatres sometime in 2022. The upcoming slate of MCU films currently looks like this:

  • Black Widow — May 1, 2020
  • The Eternals — November 6, 2020
  • Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings — February 12, 2021
  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — May 7, 2021
  • Untitled Spider-Man: Far From Home Sequel — July 16, 2021
  • Thor: Love and Thunder — November 5, 2021
  • Black Panther II — May 6, 2022

It may not always be the most exciting thing to see the same director return over and over again, but from the studio’s perspective it is safe and stable and maintains a certain consistency of vision. The only problem is that there are often expectations of a significant pay increase for sequels, which is probably why Marvel switched up their directors so often early on. Perhaps the biggest news here, however, is the fact that they are doing another solo Ant-Man movie at all considering that the first two are among the lowest-grossing MCU movies. Are you looking forward to Ant-Man 3?

I was curious about this one as it was left off the Phase 4 announcement. Jon Watts is supposed to be back for MCU Spider-Man 3 so he will probably be the first director to complete a trilogy.

Good point, I forgot about Jon Watts.

As far as “jobbers” go, Peyton Reed is one of the best (check out the totally underrated Doris Day/Rock Hudson parody Down With Love from 2003), and he’s done a good job with the Ant Man films, they have a unique, consistent tone that he helped create so this makes sense. He’s to the Ant Man series what James Gun is to Guardians of the Galaxy.

Off-topic, but I wish Paul Rudd would gain a little weight. He looks drawn and haggard.
