Little Joe Trailer: Jessica Hausner’s Killer Plant Movie

We’ve seen plenty of zombies, ghosts and killer clowns in recent years, but what has been sorely lacking in the horror genre as of late is killer plants (Alex Garland’s Annihilation notwithstanding). Fortunately, this year Austrian filmmaker Jessica Hausner has scratched that itch with her English-language debut Little Joe, which was a Palme D’Or nominee at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The story revolves around a research botanist (Emily Beecham) who starts breaking the rules in order to engineer a mood-altering plant that may be more dangerous than she realizes. Ben Whishaw, Kerry Fox and Kit Connor also co-star. Magnolia will release Little Joe in select theatres on Dec. 6th; check out the trailer below and see what you think.

Heard some really promising things from VIFF over this. Definitely looking forward to a local screening hopefully.

Feed me Seymour! Feed me all night long!

  • The film actually is quite a mash-up of Little Shop of Horrors (minus the songs) and Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

The trailer is fantastic. Music (?), use of color, composition, etc., and those interstitial credits – whoo! But, I was a teensy distracted by that lady’s hairstyle or wig; looks dated.
