Monday Morning Box Office Report: Joker Becomes the Highest Grossing R-Rated Movie

After falling to second place last week, Joker resurfaced at the top of the box office over the weekend, narrowly defeating Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil in its fourth weekend. Going into the weekend, Joker had just passed Deadpool to become the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time and now it continues to pull away as Deadpool finished its theatrical run with $783 million worldwide while Joker is now sitting at $849 million worldwide. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil dropped to second while The Addams Family climbed up one spot, slipping past Zombieland: Double Tap to take third place. STX horror movie Countdown rounded out the top 5, opening with a decent $9 million. Elsewhere, Black and Blue opened in sixth while the other new release, The Current War, debuted in ninth with an unremarkable $2.7 million. The Lighthouse also entered the top 10 after expanding to over 500 theatres and the A24 film is expected to expand even further next weekend.
