Monday Morning Box Office Report: Maleficent Presides with Lukewarm Opening

It was a familiar scene at the box office over the weekend as Disney loomed over the competition with Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, although in this case it wasn’t quite the success story that most of their other movies have been this year. The sequel debuted with $36 million, which comes in a little below industry expectations and is only about half of what the original movie made back in 2014. Joker wasn’t far behind, dropping to second place in its third weekend with another $29 million and moving past It: Chapter Two to become the seventh highest grossing movie of the year domestically. Zombieland: Double Tap actually improved slightly on its predecessor with an estimated $26.7 million start, proving that maybe the decade-long wait actually wasn’t a problem after all. The Addams Family and Gemini Man rounded out the top 5. Elsewhere, Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite finished just outside the top 10 after expanding to 33 theatres while Jojo Rabbit and The Lighthouse also had very strong per-theatre averages in their limited debuts.
