After John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum delivered the biggest box office numbers and the best reviews of the series so far, it seemed pretty clear that the franchise was not going to remain a trilogy for long. In addition to the inevitable John Wick: Chapter 4, we’ve been hearing about a potential TV show based around The Continental hotel as well. However, it would appear there are even more John Wick-related stories to be told. This week we have word that the world will expand even further with the announcement of a spin-off feature called Ballerina. Hit the jump to find out what we know.
According to Deadline, Len Wiseman will direct the John Wick spin-off Ballerina, which is being fast-tracked at Lionsgate. The movie will revolve around a young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. In John Wick: Chapter 3, a ballerina character is played by Unity Phelan, although it is unclear if she will star in the film. The Ballerina is a part of a training school for assassins run by The Director (Anjelica Huston).
Wiseman is best known for directing the first two Underworld films and 2007’s Live Free or Die Hard, but he hasn’t directed a movie since the 2012 Total Recall remake. He has been primarily working on TV shows like Sleepy Hollow, The Gifted and Swamp Thing as of late. On the surface he doesn’t seem like a great choice for this project and, to be honest, the John Wick movies are kind of the opposite of the CG-driven action movies Wiseman has done previously. That being said, this is a solid comeback opportunity for him if he can deliver the goods. Are you looking forward to Ballerina?
