Sony and Marvel Finalize Deal to Keep Spider-Man in the MCU

Following up on the recent news of yet another Sony-produced Spider-Man spin-off, Sony and Marvel have surprised everyone by announcing that Spider-Man will indeed be staying in the Marvel universe for the time being. Last month it looked like the two studios had reached an impasse with Disney / Marvel reportedly asking for a 50/50 split of the profits of the solo Spider-Man movies moving forward (as opposed to the 5% they were earning previously). We are hearing that they settled on 25% with Disney / Marvel also co-financing 25%. Kevin Feige had this to say about the announcement:

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it… Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”

The next Spider-Man movie is scheduled to hit theatres on July 16th, 2021. Marvel will also continue to have access to the character in other MCU films, although it is unclear where he might fit in at this point. Are you happy to see Spider-Man remain in the MCU after all?

“He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold”

This kind of sounds like he might end up in some Sony spidey spin-offs as well.

And the world utters a sigh of relief, all is well again.

  • Deven Science

That’s what I’m reading from that. He may make a small appearance in a Venom or other Sony film.
