Madame Web Spider-Man Spin-Off in the Works

Although Marvel fans are still holding out hope that a deal can be brokered to keep Spider-Man within the MCU, Sony is clearly moving full steam ahead with their own plans for the character. They’re already working on Venom 2 and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 but they’ve also been developing a handful of other spin-offs set in the same universe including Morbius, Nightwatch, Silk, Kraven the Hunter, Black Cat and Silver Sable. Now this week we are hearing that Sony is digging even deeper into the Spider-Man roster with a potential Madame Web spin-off. But who the heck is Madame Web? Read on to find out what we know.
The news comes courtesy of Collider, who report that Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold, Gods of Egypt) have been hired to write a Madame Web movie for Sony. The duo previously wrote the script for Morbius, which is scheduled to hit theatres on July 31st, 2020 with Jared Leto in the lead role. The character is described as follows:
“Created by writer Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr., Madame Web first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #210, which was published by Marvel Comics in November 1980. Known as Cassandra Webb, she is usually depicted as an elderly blind woman suffering from a chronic neuromuscular disease that makes it difficult to move and breathe, and as such, she’s connected to a life support system that looks like a spider web. The clairvoyant character has precognitive abilities and once helped Spider-Man find a kidnap victim.”
She also supposedly has ties to the multiverse, which could explain their interest in the character. Of course, with all of these spin-offs, the main question is the same: can the character support their own movie even if Spider-Man doesn’t appear? This one is difficult to imagine without someone for her to train or work with. Are you looking forward to a Madame Web movie?
