Back in the ’90s, before superheroes completely took over Hollywood, there were a lot of strange comic book adaptations being produced… things like the oddball post-apocalyptic action movie Tank Girl. The movie was a box office bomb at the time and is possibly best remembered for Bjork’s music video for “Army of Me”, but over the years it has developed a bit of a cult following. The Tank Girl comics also recently experienced a revival with original writer Alan Martin returning to launch the first ever ongoing series for the character. Now it looks like a feature film reboot is also happening and Margot Robbie might star. Hit the jump for more details.
According to Collider, Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment has optioned the rights to the Tank Girl comic from MGM with the intention of producing a new movie. Miles Joris-Peyrafitte has been hired to direct after working with Robbie on the upcoming film Dreamland. It is unclear if the original creators will have any involvement, but they have yet to be contacted by the producers.
A sequel had been rumoured years ago with the director of the 1995 film, Rachel Talalay, supposedly pursuing it. Robbie is said to be interested in starring in the reboot, but she will wait to read the script before deciding. It is definitely easy to see a connection between this character and Robbie’s take on Harley Quinn, both of which are sort of anarchist feminist icons.
