After helping to catapult Brie Larson to stardom with the acclaimed indie drama Short Term 12, writer-director Destin Daniel Cretton eventually landed a major gig directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for Marvel. Before that happens, however, he also has a star-studded legal drama coming out this fall that just might have some awards season potential. Just Mercy is based on a true story and stars Michael B. Jordan as Bryan Stevenson, a civil rights defense lawyer who took on the case of Walter McMillian, an African-American man who found himself on death row in Alabama for murder. The supporting cast includes Jamie Foxx, Brie Larson, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Rafe Spall and Tim Blake Nelson and the movie will make its world premiere at TIFF this weekend. Just Mercy hits select theatres on Dec. 25th; check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

Looks like a tear jerker to me.

Can’t even read the review now. I can’t get over the fact you think Brie Larson’s career “launched” in 2013. The girl has 63 acting credits and has been acting for more than a decade. I think you have it backwards.

I would argue it was the movie that made her a star. But I am aware she was working for many years prior to that both as an actor and musician.
