It wasn’t exactly a well-kept secret, but after years of rumours, fans received confirmation this weekend that Ewan McGregor will indeed be returning to the Star Wars universe in the near future. The further adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi will be coming to the small screen in the form of a Disney+ series rather than a movie spin-off as originally planned. Details are still mostly unknown but McGregor appeared on stage at D23 to make it official. The Lucasfilm press release reads as follows:
“The Disney+ panel was the first to announce an all-new Star Wars series in development, one that many fans have been asking to see since the closing scenes of 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. Ewan McGregor, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi, electrified the audience when he emerged following the announcement of his involvement in a new series taking place eight years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, where we last saw Obi-Wan delivering the infant Luke Skywalker to his Tatooine homestead.”
Kathleen Kennedy stated that all of the scripts had been completed and that the show would start production next year. Director Stephen Daldry (The Reader, Billy Elliot) was previously rumoured to be directing back when it was a feature film, but it is unclear if he is still involved in the show. No other announcements were made regarding the creative team at this time. Are you psyched for an Obi-Wan TV series?
