The Matrix 4 Moving Forward with Lana Wachowski, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss

With The Matrix celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and Keanu Reeves currently experiencing an unexpected career resurgence, Warner Brothers has officially managed to finalize a deal for a fourth Matrix movie. We have been hearing rumours about a reboot for years, but surprisingly the new movie will bring back Lana Wachowski to direct with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss attached to reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity respectively. Plot details are still under wraps and it is unclear if this will be a direct sequel to The Matrix Revolutions. Wachowski had this to say about the announcement:

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

The script is being co-written by Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell (Sense8) and they are reportedly looking to start production in early 2020. Whether Morpheus will appear in the movie remains to be seen but Laurence Fishburne does not seem to be involved. There is talk that perhaps a younger version of the character may appear instead. Are you looking forward to re-entering The Matrix?

I just don’t know where they would go, 20 years later, with how the trilogy ended.

Well, they have plenty where to go, because the world has changed so much since the films were made. However, when Matrix was made it was strangely prescient and ahead of the curve. Now that each of us is lost in our own little matrices in the shape of small rectangles, it will have to jump ahead again to not feel dated. I’m really not sure how this can be achieved with Trinity still being alive, but hey, it’s science fiction. Anything is possible.

Old man Keanu will be the Morpheus figure, leading a new team of young disciples. Carrie-Anne will be a virtual reality enemy created by a resurgent A.I. Possibly. This stuff writes itself.
