Although the long-gestating live-action Masters of the Universe movie is still moving forward at Sony with Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before) attached to star, over the weekend He-Man fans received another unexpected announcement to get excited about. Kevin Smith made a surprise appearance at Power-Con in Anaheim to unveil a brand new He-Man animated series for which he will be acting as showrunner. Masters of the Universe: Revelation is coming to Netflix and will be a limited series acting as a direct sequel to the ’80s cartoon. Here is what Smith had to say about the announcement:
“I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull, but also their entire Universe… In Revelation, we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor! Brought to life with the most metal character designs Powerhouse Animation can contain in the frame, this is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!”
The show will also be staffed by a team of writers that includes Eric Carrasco (Supergirl), Tim Sheridan (Reign of the Supermen), Diya Mishra (Magic the Gathering) and Marc Bernardin (Alphas). Netflix just recently launched season 3 of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, their reinvention of the ’80s animated series that focused on He-Man’s twin sister. It is unclear if the two shows could cross over in any way but they would seem to be set in different continuities / universes. Kevin Smith was previously developing a Buckaroo Banzai TV show for Amazon but was forced to bow out when legal issues derailed the project. Are you looking forward to Masters of the Universe: Revelation?
