Neill Blomkamp Drops Out as Director of RoboCop Returns

We’ve got some unfortunate news to report this week surrounding the upcoming RoboCop sequel, RoboCop Returns, which is currently in development at MGM. Last summer we heard that Neill Blomkamp had been hired to direct a sequel to the original 1987 film based on an old script from original writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner. This would supposedly ignore the 2014 reboot and give fans what they really wanted, including (hopefully) Peter Weller reprising his role (he recently did some KFC ads too). However, this week Blomkamp has posted an update on Twitter revealing that he is no longer working on the project:

It is not immediately clear if it was a simple scheduling conflict or if there were creative differences as well, but it is at least nice to know that Blomkamp has something else in the works. After writing and directing three original sci-fi films, he hasn’t had much luck working on studio properties, previously having his Alien movie put on hold as well. At any rate, it sounds like RoboCop Returns is still moving forward without him. Are you disappointed by this news? Who would you like to see direct a RoboCop sequel?

lol, was that actually Peter Weller in those ads?

  • So the dude joins Alien 5 and drops out, joins RoboCop and drops out, wasn’t he also tapped to do a live-action Halo that never came to be?

Maybe he was pushing for his buddy Sharlto Copley as Murphy and the studio wasn’t having it.

Could have been good, but I also don’t know if Blomkamp has had any solid hits outside of District 9. Also, the Koreans seemed to be way ahead of the curve on this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pOoSe2K5DU

None of the Robocop sequels done in real time could touch the original, so a sequel made 30 years later? Unless you hire Paul Verhoeven back, I don’t understand the excitement.

I respect Neill Blomkamp for doing original genre pictures (apparently not strictly out of choice), but the fact of the matter is he has not made a good movie since District 9.

    Good call Neil.

Thanks for the laugh but dammit, now I need KFC!
