We’ve got some unfortunate news to report this week surrounding the upcoming RoboCop sequel, RoboCop Returns, which is currently in development at MGM. Last summer we heard that Neill Blomkamp had been hired to direct a sequel to the original 1987 film based on an old script from original writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner. This would supposedly ignore the 2014 reboot and give fans what they really wanted, including (hopefully) Peter Weller reprising his role (he recently did some KFC ads too). However, this week Blomkamp has posted an update on Twitter revealing that he is no longer working on the project:
Off Robocop. I am shooting new horror/thriller and MGM can’t wait/ need to shoot Robocop now. Excited to watch it in theaters with other fans. N

It is not immediately clear if it was a simple scheduling conflict or if there were creative differences as well, but it is at least nice to know that Blomkamp has something else in the works. After writing and directing three original sci-fi films, he hasn’t had much luck working on studio properties, previously having his Alien movie put on hold as well. At any rate, it sounds like RoboCop Returns is still moving forward without him. Are you disappointed by this news? Who would you like to see direct a RoboCop sequel?
