Update: THR is reporting that Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) will star in the Snake Eyes solo movie.
It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about Paramount’s upcoming plans for the G.I. Joe movie franchise, but it would appear that they haven’t given up on it yet. The last movie, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, hit theatres back in 2013 and did decent business without being a giant hit, so it has taken a while for a follow-up to materialize. Late last year it was announced that Robert Schwentke (RED) had been hired to direct a Snake Eyes solo movie, and although that is still happening, we are now hearing that another spin-off is also in development. Hit the jump to find out what we know.
According to THR, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol) have been hired to write a script for a new G.I. Joe live action movie. It is being described as an “ensemble piece” as opposed to a solo movie, but there is only one character confirmed to be involved so far. That character is the Hawaiian shirt-wearing undercover specialist, Chuckles… didn’t see that coming.
Chuckles previously appeared in the 1987 animated film G.I. Joe: The Movie as a member of the “Rawhides”, a group of new recruits under the supervision of Beachhead. Could this mean that the Rawhides are the focus of this new movie and that we might see Sgt. Slaughter in it as well? I think he is still doing occasional appearances in the WWE, so it’s definitely possible! Are you looking forward to a new G.I. Joe movie and do you have any other characters you’d like to see on screen?
