  • Cream Neeson

Think this is the scene that guy was talking about with the person saying “that love was mine”

  • Kasper

Haven’t finished listening to the episode yet, but I am a little worried regarding pins. Have they been sent yet? I got the initial email regarding being welcomed to the 700 club and I am pretty sure I filled in everything back then, but since Ive never received any sort of confirmation since, I just panicked and filled it out again.

  • Sean

I think Frank will be sending out some initial packages this week. We are doing a small test batch first to make sure that if we just send them as letter mail they will still arrive at their destination. Sorry we are taking so long, but I can confirm that you are on the list!

  • John

    Suggestions for De Palma Premium:
    Phantom of the Paradise
    Dressed to Kill
    Blow Out
    Body Double
    The Untouchables

    Suggestions for Cronenberg Premium:
Rabid (I prefer Shivers, but it’s not easily available in region A, plus the Rabid remake is coming out this year)
    The Brood
    The Dead Zone
    The Fly
    Dead Ringers

  • CagneyB

‘Nute Gunray Pizza’ should be the name of Frank’s YouTube channel.

  • pcch7

Jay’s instagram drawings would be good tattoo designs

  • pcch7

I’m not sure if I got the email or not, I recently cleared out the whole inbox

  • MartyMcFlyJr

“You think I don’t know how to frame out a mic?” hahaha, Jay was on fire this episode. I think you guys should think about doing one of these junk mail shows once or twice a year, it was great. Bummer about the Drive-In though. I feel like I’ve been to that place from all the stories you’ve shared about it. Where will Jay get his poutine?

  • Sam

Jay needs to check out Powerhouse Indicator as boutique labels go. It’s a UK label but most releases are region free. They have a lot of overlapping titles with Twilight Time and it’s gone to the point where I’ve just stopped by Twilight Time unless I know for sure it’s not getting released by Indicator in the future.

  • ezekielf

    great episode! loves the impressions

  • parapa

Great episode, whole crew was on fire. Impression bits was gold

  • Jay Cheel

Thanks Sam, that was the other label I was trying to remember. I actually own a number of Powerhouse Indicator release, including their two volume release of William Castle films. Primo packaging as well.

  • schizopolis

I immediately thought of this scene too!

  • Sam

Yeah I love their packaging. Not sure it you got it before it went OOP but their limited edition release of Night of the Demon, speaking of Jacques Tourneur, is easily one of my favorite things I own

  • Jay Cheel

I got the regular release. The limited edition was a bit too pricey for me.

  • Indianamcclain

    Cronenberg Premium finally confirmed!

  • Sam

Yeah the movie on it’s own has been slowly creepy it’s way in my top 100, but theres so much crammed in to that limited edition version where it’s a dream release I never actually thought would be released if not for this age of physical media where even the most obscure release gets such great treatment (i.e. Vinegar Syndrome).

Night of the Demon and Drag Me to Hell is probably decent double bill

  • Tommy

I’ve been thinking aboot doing a canadianisms compilation for a while noow and I think this’ll be the shoow to finally try it. Stay tooned.

  • Lior

I’m only about 30 minutes in, but not sure about something. Was this show broadcast on video somewhere? I don’t have an Instagram account.

  • Sean

Yes we did two impromptu Instagram Live broadcasts during the show. We have talked about maybe doing some YouTube Live stuff as well but Instagram is more convenient, particularly when we haven’t announced that we are doing it ahead of time. I guess I might be able to also throw up some of the Instagram videos on YouTube afterward if there is a desire for that.

  • Kenneth Serenyi

To Jay’s points about a release of the theatrical versions of the original Star Wars trilogy – I’ve heard from reliable sources that as part of the Disney purchase of Lucasfilm, the Special Editions are the only “real” versions of the Star Wars trilogy and are the only editions that can be released. George Lucas actually did approve of that 70mm viewing of the theatrical version of the first Star Wars, since it was a one shot deal to a special audience.

  • Lior

Thanks, Sean. I’m starting to feel a little left out with this Instagram thing… :-) :-)

  • JuzMe

Maybe I’ve been watching too many real crime YouTube videos, but Tom Hanks looks like a real creeper in the episode pic.

  • How much money they could make if they’d just release the theatrical versions on UHD. So much money.

  • How does one get a hold on when this stuff is streaming? I don’t even know what times the fellas start recording (outside of the FB announcement of the week day). Do Instagram followers get, like, a push-notification when stuff like this happens?

  • Sean

Yep there is a push notification and when you’re in the app it also highlights anyone that is currently live.

I’m sure YouTube and Twitch must have alerts as well though. If we were going to take video stuff more seriously we should probably start using those more, but it’s also a bit more work.

We usually record around 8 pm EST but the actual day alternates a lot and sometimes changes at the last minute, which is why it’s tough to announce ahead of time.

  • pcch7

I’d buy them in a second. Haven’t been able to bring myself to watch the blurays, given the horrendous changes he made.

  • pcch7

Twitch does for sure, both a desktop notification and email.

  • devolutionary

The perfect fanatical film face tattoo would be Sam Neill’s (John Trent in the cell) creation at the end of “In The Mouth of Madness”. Now that’s dedication!

  • OsoDuck

I have a gimmick for an upcoming episode, although I’m sure it must have been done at this point by another podcast; A retro review of The Hidden Fortress in anticipation of the new Schlock Wars movie, to see where it all began.

Have to give Kurosawa a best director shout out for this Kagemusha trailer alone, which includes a shot of Coppola and Lucas on the set of the film. This guy has other directors fan man-ing all over the place in trailers for his films. Here’s a question: what other trailer for a director’s film includes shots of other famous directors on the set of said film? There cannot be many. This is an easy win.

  • Brian Adams

Please, please do this! Jay’s commitment to this gag (he came in with time codes for Christ’s sake) deserves to be rewarded!

  • colin the dude

Impression bits was an all-time bit. I had tears in my eyes multiple times. Thanks as always for bringing joy to the world, dudes.

  • Bizzaro Nate

I’ve been listening to Film Junk for so long that I’m starting to developed a subtle Ontario accent!

  • Bizzaro Nate
  • Bizzaro Nate — It’s not “OAT” it’s not “OUT” it’s something in between. It’s not “Surry” it’s not “Sorry” it’s somewhere in between. It’s not “About” or “Aboot” or “Aboat” it’s all three blended together. I think the accents are super obvious for non-Candian listeners like myself – and they’re awesome!

  • Lior

Hearing Jay rattle off the movies that scared him as a kid (!), I’m like, what the fuck…. that is some tough kid…

For Frank it was The Black Cauldron. For me it was Sleeping Beauty, when the witch turns into a dragon… oh mama. That’s the thing with those old cartoons, they weren’t afraid to be a little intense, the filmmakers assumed their audience can handle it. When Jim Hansom made The Dark Crystal he said that it’s healthy for children to be scared a little. If you read modern reviews of the film you see a lot of complaints that it’s too scary for its intended audience. That is just modern sensibility.

I think kids today are far too sheltered and that could produce and already producing adults that get upset and offended too easily and lack coping mechanisms against anything perceived as threatening their sense of self. Getting scared by a movie (I’m not saying you should watch The Green Inferno, yes?) can give you some backbone. Stephen King devotes a chapter to this topic in his excellent reconstruction of the Horror genre, Danse Macabre.

  • Aaron

One of Frank’s all-time favorite movies. He must be SWEATING right now.

  • Sam

Frank: “I watch older stuff” (or something like that at least)

The last time Frank watched something that wasn’t a new release, something for the show (premium/Prescribing Frank), or a re-watch:

Little Shop of Horrors (1960) – back in September 2018, only movie in the last 12 months.

    For Sean….Diner. This week.

Come on bud! Let Jay expand you a little bit, cinematically.

  • Cream Neeson

“Sounds like some Swanberg shit” he said. Must be sweating bullets.

  • gibson8

By older he means rewatches of stuff he saw a few weeks, months ago. He lies. He’s Frank.

  • Newtman98

For some reason it scared the absolute shit out of me in Superman when Christopher Reeves screams before changing the rotation of the Earth. I would have to leave the room and come back when it ended.

  • Lior

Yes, for children often the things you would find relatively innocuous in movies or TV shows scare them. Their fright mechanism is fascinating. I was totally freaked out by several episode of A Little House in the Prairie, which is supposed to be a family show.

  • Beat_C

what a gem of an episode, loved it! i almost spat out my coffee laughing when frank dismissed truffaut and billy wilder as best directors ever only to go on to offer the crown to james cameron.

  • Love the trauma that Crazy Rich Asians and Sean’s rating of the film have inflicted on Frank.

  • Sam

Billy Wilder would easily be up there for me. Ace In the Hole, The Apartment, Some Like It Hot, Double Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard is as a strong a set a five films by any director. That’s not even bringing up others like Witness for the Prosecution, Stalag 17, One Two Three, etc…

Also laughed at Frank just outright dismissing him.

  • Beat_C

he’s probably only ever seen one billy wilder movie or so. ????
