Despite poor reviews from critics and mixed reactions from fans, Venom turned out to be a pretty huge hit for Sony, earning $856 million worldwide. A sequel went into development almost immediately after the first movie hit theatres, but with Ruben Fleischer busy shooting Zombieland 2, Sony was forced to look for another director. Now this week they have announced an unexpected choice for the sequel: Gollum himself, Andy Serkis, will reportedly be taking the reins. Hit the jump for more details.
According to Variety, Andy Serkis will direct Venom 2 for Sony. Tom Hardy seemed to prematurely make the announcement last week when he posted a photo of Serkis on his Instagram account and then quickly deleted it. Travis Knight (Bumblebee) and Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) were supposedly also in the running for the job.
Serkis may seem like an odd choice but he has been getting a lot of directing experience under his belt in recent years, having acted as a second unit director on The Hobbit Trilogy and then helming Breathe and the other Jungle Book movie Mowgli. No doubt his expertise in motion capture technology was a big selling point. The script for Venom 2 was written by Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey) and the movie is believed to be hitting theatres on Oct. 2nd, 2020. Are you looking forward to a Venom sequel?
