Although Sam Mendes has spent the majority of the past decade working on the James Bond franchise with Skyfall and Spectre, this year he is back with a new original movie that looks to be putting his big budget filmmaking skills to good use. 1917 is a WWI movie that revolves around two young British soldiers who are sent deep into enemy territory in order to warn their fellow soldiers of a deadly trap. It does not appear to be based on a specific true story, but the locations, period details and Roger Deakins’ cinematography make this look pretty authentic. With a marketing campaign that is subtly attempting to associate it with Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk and a cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, Richard Madden, Andrew Scott and Mark Strong, this seems like it could be both a commercial and critical success. 1917 hits theatres on Dec. 25th; check out the first trailer after the jump and see what you think.
