A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Trailer Starring Tom Hanks

Following the outpouring of emotion, praise and critical acclaim for Morgan Neville’s documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor last year, Sony Pictures decided to build on that wave of goodwill with a Mr. Rogers biopic of their own. Tom Hanks plays Fred Rogers in what is obviously perfect casting and probably the main reason why this movie is actually getting made. The story frames Rogers’ life and accomplishments through the eyes of Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys), a slightly jaded journalist who is hired to write an article about him for Esquire. Directed by Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?, The Diary of a Teenage Girl), the marketing campaign is focusing heavily on the message of kindness and the movie seems destined to be in the awards season discussion later this year. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood hits theatres on Nov. 22nd; check out the first trailer below and let us know what you think.

  • I’m not the biggest fan of the “journalist has to write an article”-framing device for biopics (e.g. My Dinner with Herve”).

This feels unsettling, like I’m watching deep fake footage, and starring none other than serial oscarbaitor, Tom Hanks. If anything this motivates me to watch the documentary from last year instead.

  • Tommy

It’s just like the Marwen movie. Any press is just gonna tell people to watch the good doco instead.

  • Matt the Kiwi

I believe the last scene in the trailer has been shortened from the original version “That was wonderful…the first 500 times somebody sang it to me!”
