Cats Trailer: The Broadway Musical Gets a Nightmarish Big Screen Adaptation

Well this is definitely one of the weirdest trailers you’re likely to see coming out of Comic-Con this weekend. Universal is adapting the Tony Award-winning musical Cats, but rather than have the star-studded cast don costumes they have opted for a CG-heavy approach that pulls the actors into a disturbing uncanny valley. Directed by Tom Hooper (Les Miserables, The King’s Speech), on paper this seems like it should be a surefire hit given a cast that includes Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, Judi Dench and Ian McKellen. That being said, this trailer seems to have fiasco written all over it. Is it too late to take a page out of the Sonic the Hedgehog playbook and simply redesign everything? Cats hits theatres on Dec. 20th where it will face off with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker; check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

Gotta say I don’t find it disturbing, I actually find it pretty impressive and kind of awesome.
But then, I’m a cat person.

  • Lori Cerny

I’m a cat person, too, but find this immensely revolting.

  • Lior

    Strong words.

I don’t see anything that has not been done before to a degree either through motion capture or through costumes. It’s almost too well done so it borders on the uncanny valley, but I appreciate the audacity and honestly can’t understand what all the hoopla is about. It’s people with cats’s faces. The internet can be strange sometimes, with these “tsunamis of likes/dislikes” that attach themselves to a certain pop culture moment like barnacles to a boat. I remember when Snakes on a Plane came out and it was met online with a tsunami of enthusiasm for some reason and ended up hardly making its money back and today nobody remembers it ever existed.

Please bring back trailer trash this week so this abomination can be discussed in detail lol.

Finally, Hollywood recognizes the furry community.

Instantly made me think of this:

  • Lori Cerny

For me, it’s something about two breasts being on a female cat. Not only biologically wrong, but icky.

Reminds me of the recent Sonic the Hedgehog snafu.

  • Lior

Didn’t Catwoman have breasts in Batman Returns? Catwoman has been traditionally a sensual character, especially how Michelle Pfeiffer played her in that film. For me this plays in the same wheelhouse. It may be biologically wrong, but how else are you going to do anthropomorphic cats?

Just to be clear: I’m not some huge fan of the musical, I’ve never seen it on stage and other than Memories I don’t even know any songs.

If the filmmakers pull a Sonic and buckle under the negative reaction to the trailer I will certainly lose my respect for them :-)
Regardless of my personal opinions, it’s a fascinating study in how a trailer of a film, that is supposed to generate interest and buzz, completely backfires and might even hurt the film’s success, which is the complete opposite intention. This of course would have not been possible before the internet.
