Having successfully made the jump to big budget blockbusters with Thor: Ragnarok, Kiwi director Taika Waititi is very much in demand right now although he is continuing to mix his studio work with smaller personal projects. His next film, Jojo Rabbit, hits theatres in October and now he is officially starting pre-production on the long-rumoured live-action Akira remake. He also has a bunch of TV stuff on the go but this week we are hearing he is adding an intriguing animated feature to his portfolio as well. Hit the jump for more info.
According to Deadline, Taika Waititi has signed on to develop an animated Flash Gordon movie for Fox and Disney. Fox has been trying to set up a new Flash Gordon movie for years now with Matthew Vaughn previously attached and, most recently, Overlord director Julius Avery. It would seem that no one could quite figure out how to adapt the material, however, and this is the first we have heard of an animated version. It could be an inspired choice.
It is still unclear if Waititi will be writing and/or directing the film, but something tells me his schedule will not allow it. He was previously involved in an animated film set up at Netflix called Bubbles, focusing on Michael Jackson’s life through the eyes of his pet chimp. That project has fallen apart in the wake of the HBO documentary Leaving Neverland, however. Would you watch an animated Flash Gordon movie?
