Ad Astra Trailer: James Gray’s Sci-fi Thriller Starring Brad Pitt

After directing acclaimed dramas like Two Lovers, The Immigrant and The Lost City of Z, James Gray is the latest auteur to tackle science-fiction with his upcoming film Ad Astra. The movie stars Brad Pitt as an astronaut who survives a strange accident in space only to slowly realize it may be connected to the disappearance of his father during a mission years ago. According to the official plot synopsis, “his journey will uncover secrets that challenge the nature of human existence and our place in the cosmos.” Pretty heavy stuff. The first trailer mostly keeps things vague, but it does seem to be reaching towards the realm of cerebral and ambitious SF movies like Interstellar and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Ad Astra co-stars Tommy Lee Jones, Liv Tyler, Ruth Negga and Donald Sutherland and it hits theatres on Sept. 20th; check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

Bummed this got delayed, was really looking forward to seeing it last week lol. Hopefully this Sept date isn’t an indication it’s going to be a dud. Sept is closer to awards so there’s that but can also be a dumping ground for studios.

Yes, the lunar rover car chase/shootout screams heady sci-fi

The comparison to Interstellar is not doing it any favors either
