We’ve got one more comic book movie to add to the summer movie season, although there are no superheroes to be found here. Based on the Vertigo graphic novel by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle, The Kitchen is a gangster flick with a plot reminiscent of Widows where the wives of three mob bosses are forced to take the reins when their husbands are arrested. The story is set in Hell’s Kitchen in 1970s New York City (the tongue-in-cheek title also playing on gender roles of the time) and it stars Melissa McCarthy and Tiffany Haddish in decidedly unfunny roles opposite Elisabeth Moss. Originally planned for a September release, it is now scheduled for August instead which may indicate that it is more popcorn flick than awards contender. Then again, they might simply be hoping for a surprise August hit like Straight Outta Compton, which was also written by first-time director Andrea Berloff. The Kitchen hits theatres on Aug. 9th; check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.
