It feels a little early to be talking about awards season, but no doubt that is the intended destination for the upcoming Judy Garland biopic Judy starring Renee Zellweger. Of course, whether it will find Zellweger back in the hunt for the first time since the early 2000s remains to be seen. The movie is directed by Rupert Goold (True Story) and it is based on Peter Quilter’s stage play End of the Rainbow, which focuses on Garland’s five-week sold-out run at The Talk of the Town in London in 1968, some 30 years after she rose to fame with The Wizard of Oz. It certainly looks like there is a big transformative performance here but it’s hard to shake the feeling that these kinds of predictable biopics just growing increasingly obsolete. Judy hits select theatres on Sept. 27th; check out the first trailer after the jump and see what you think.
