Sonic the Hedgehog Trailer

Video game fans have been understandably concerned ever since Paramount debuted the teaser poster for a Sonic the Hedgehog movie back in December, but this week the first full trailer has hit the web and sadly it looks like those fears were well-founded. They seem to be going for the same furry, photorealistic look as Detective Pikachu, but here Sonic just comes across as incredibly disturbing. This is a live-action / CG hybrid and the story revolves around a small-town sherriff (played by James Marsden) who teams up with Sonic to take on his arch enemy Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Ben Schwartz provides the voice of Sonic and there’s a little bit of “Gangsta’s Paradise” thrown in to give you that ’90s nostalgia fix. Sonic the Hedgehog is directed by first-time filmmaker Jeff Fowler and it hits theatres on Nov. 8th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

  • Oh. Oh no.

Will this top Super Mario Bros. The Movie? Only paint-chipping time will tell. That trailer is only slightly more disturbing than the full motion cut scenes in Sonic 2006.

I’ve seen so many memes for this already, and I’m sure not the kind the studio wants. I wonder if they’re going to try to change the look of Sonic before it comes out. Might be too late.

  • I think when it comes to video game characters like Sonic and Mario live action is definitely not the route to take. The choice of using the Gangsters Paradise song in the trailer was funny in a bad way. Jim Carrey’s role as Sonic’s arch nemesis Robotnik (originally called Doctor Eggman) reminds me of Deniro in Rocky and Bullwinkle the movie. You know when Japanese video game characters get filtered through American movie studios it’s always going to miss the original tone in the worst way. Looks almost as bad as Super Mario Brothers the movie.

Sean, news flash!!! Due to the amount of negative feedback received, Paramount will actually be fixing the character design. There can be no doubt that the movie will still be trash but at least it will look like the right kind of trash.
