Acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou has become more well-known in North America as of late after working with various A-list Hollywood stars (including Matt Damon in the box office bomb The Great Wall), but for his latest film he has chosen to return to his homeland to work with an all Chinese cast and crew. The movie is called Shadow and it looks like a return to form of sorts, bringing him back to the period wuxia epics he is best known for like Hero and House of Flying Daggers. That being said, the visuals are uncharacteristically dark and desaturated, which is something new for him. This appears to be a thematic choice as the Well Go USA synopsis indicates that he is “masterfully painting a canvas of inky blacks and greys punctuated with bursts of color from the blood of the defeated.” So there you go. Shadow stars Deng Chao, Sun Li and Zheng Ka and it hits select theatres on May 3rd. If your name is Reed Farrington, check out the trailer and give us your thoughts in the comments below.
