Monday Morning Box Office Report: Fortune Smiles on The Curse of La Llorona

With no other high profile releases hitting theatres, Warner Brothers and New Line’s horror film The Curse of La Llorona easily topped the box office over the weekend with a solid $26.5 million debut. That’s the lowest opening for a movie in The Conjuring Universe so far, but to be fair, it is also the movie with the loosest ties to that franchise. Overall, it still exceeded expectations and earned well beyond its $9 million budget. Warner Brothers and New Line also claimed second place with Shazam! dropping to #2, taking another $17.3 million, followed by Fox’s faith-based film Breakthrough with $11.1 million. Captain Marvel and Little rounded out the top 5. It’s interesting that Captain Marvel is still making so much money with Avengers: Endgame just a few days away. Elsewhere, Disney’s Penguins documentary was a bit of a disappointment, opening at #12 with just $2.3 million ($3.3 million over five days) which is the worst opening weekend for a Disneynature film to date.
