Monday Morning Box Office Report: Us Delivers Third Highest R-Rated Horror Debut Ever

It was a big weekend for Jordan Peele as his sophomore film Us completely obliterated expectations and more than doubled the opening weekend numbers of his previous film, Get Out, making for a monster $70.3 million debut. That is apparently the third highest start ever for an R-rated horror movie and it is also the biggest debut for an R-rated horror movie not based on pre-existing source material (the previous record for that would have been last year’s A Quiet Place with $50.2 million). All in all, it is very good news for fans of original stories and thoughtful genre films on the big screen. In second place, Captain Marvel added another $35 million domestically and $52.1 million overseas to hit $910 million worldwide. Wonder Park fell to third followed by Five Feet Apart and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World rounded out the top 5. Elsewhere, the A24 drama Gloria Bell jumped into 7th place with $1.8 million after expanding to 654 theatres while the Spanish comedy No Manches Frida 2 also opened with similar numbers.
