Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Trailer

After releasing a couple of questionable teaser posters earlier this week, Sony has finally released the first trailer for Quentin Tarantino’s 9th film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. And it looks great. Set in Los Angeles in 1969, the movie revolves around fictional TV actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), but several actors play real-life Hollywood personalities including Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate, Damian Lewis as Steve McQueen and Mike Moh as Bruce Lee. The Manson Family murders also figure in somehow although we don’t yet know to what extent (Damon Herriman plays Charles Manson). Once Upon a Time in Hollywood hits theatres on July 26th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

    So, is there a story here? Trailer comes off as nostalgia-porn.

    To be fair, it is only a teaser trailer. Most teasers don’t really get into the story.

    Yeah that’s true. I’m jumping the gun a bit. I loved Django which was very much a clear story, and didn’t feel much for Hateful Eight which I felt was about nothing. For me, QT fell into the wankpit once before, after Pulp Fiction (can anyone tell me what Jackie Brown and Kill Bill were about?), and the success of Django and subsequent movie reminds me of this a bit.

    Edit: Also Bruce Lee impersonation is pretty bad. Feel like most directors would be shamed for something like that.

    I thought the Bruce Lee impersonation was incredible. I was shocked how much it looked and sounded like him.

    Brad Pitt looks computer animated in that picture.

    Pitt, Dicaprio, and Tarantino, to me, are the holy trinity of everything that’s wrong with modern hollywood. Old men trying to look cool who weren’t even cool when they were young. Tarantino is a geek who doesn’t care about an interesting story or image, he’s a crow trying to stuff as many flashy shiny objects into his bird’s nest of a movie as is humanly possible.

    It’s a shame too cause I thought this was supposed to be about Manson. Now that’s a subject that needs a director fit to the task of pulling it together.
