New to Theatres This Weekend: Captive State, Wonder Park, Five Feet Apart

We’ve got three major releases hitting theatres this weekend, although none will come close to matching the continued marketing might of Captain Marvel. Paramount’s animated film Wonder Park should be the biggest of the bunch, providing family audiences with an alternative to How to Train Your Dragon 3, while Rupert Wyatt’s sci-fi film Captive State seems to be getting dumped by Focus Features with a distinct lack of marketing and reviews. Also in wide release we have the tragic teen romance Five Feet Apart. In select theatres, look for the Spanish comedy No Manches Frida 2, The Hummingbird Project starring Jesse Eisenberg and Alexander Skarsgard, and Idris Elba’s directorial debut Yardie. What will you be watching this weekend?

    Triple Frontier is my pick this week. It might be my favorite Netflix original movie to date. I can’t believe the laundry list of huge names that were attached to it at one point, but glad Netflix came to the rescue. Hoping you guys get a chance to discuss it on a future show.

    New Jia Zhang-ke wooooooo! Ash is Purest White is an awesome title.

    I remember when his 2004 film The World came out and all the local entertainment newspaper film critics raved about it. I thought I would be able to find a Chinese bootleg of the film at a local shop, but apparently The World wasn’t popular enough to deserve a bootleg. Several years later, I happened to notice The World selling for $1 brand new in bargain bins. Excitedly, I bought it and watched it and I didn’t like it. I guess I won’t be able to be a real film critic until I learn to appreciate Jia Zhangke.

    Sean mentioned to me that he had watched it, so I watched it in order to review it with him on the 700th podcast. (Preview: I enjoyed it. Coincidentally, I had watched The Dirty Dozen last week, which has the assembling for a mission premise as well.)

    Some critics find his style hard to connect with, so you’re not alone (and it’s not as if this would be the first acclaimed auteur who hasn’t impressed you). With that said, I don’t think The World is considered one of his best. I liked it, but I’d still recommend movies like A Touch of Sin, Still Life and this movie as they may play better. I still need to catch up with some of his acclaimed earlier work.

    Did you see his Chinese New Year short film that was shot on an iPhone? It’s a bit surprising but interesting to see him embrace such a baldly commercial, sentimental project.

    Just watched The Bucket. Really enjoyed it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I should watch the “making of” videos to see how he managed to get the aerial shots including the tracking shot of the bike going along the bridge. He must have attached the iPhone to a drone. As a side thought, I thought a bucket of sand would be much heavier.
