Monday Morning Box Office Report: Captain Marvel Goes Higher, Further, Faster

No surprises here… Captain Marvel blew open the box office over the weekend with a massive $153 million domestic debut. That’s the seventh highest opening ever for a Marvel movie and the third highest opening weekend ever in March. It is also $50 million more than Wonder Woman made back in 2017 and it single-handedly surpasses all previous three-day weekends in 2019 with all the theatrical releases combined. Although 2019 has been somewhat lacklustre so far, it is certainly becoming more clear than ever that Marvel movies are among the few must-see theatrical events for the average moviegoer. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World fell to second place with $14.7 million followed by Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral. The Lego Movie 2 and Alita: Battle Angel rounded out the top 5. Meanwhile, Apollo 11 managed to become one of the rare documentaries to break into the top 10 with $1.3 million.
