Last month it was announced that Will Smith would not be reprising his role as Deadshot in the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel, apparently due to scheduling issues (hey, he’s got a Bucket List to take care of and apparently that movie is not on it). Losing a major star like that could have been a big problem for the movie, but this week we are hearing they have already found a replacement and some might say they traded up. Idris Elba is reportedly in talks to take over the role. Hit the jump for more details.
According to THR, Idris Elba is in talks to replace Will Smith in the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel (which is apparently titled The Suicide Squad… that’s not confusing at all). James Gunn wrote the script and is on board to direct for Warner Brothers and Elba is said to have been their first and only choice. It attaches him to another major comic book movie franchise after he exited the MCU last year.
Gunn’s sequel will supposedly introduce mostly new characters and is being seen as a sort of soft reboot although Deadshot is one of the few characters that will return. There have been conflicting reports about whether Harley Quinn and Rick Flagg will be back although the latest update seems to be that the former is in and latter is not. Margot Robbie will also appear in the Harley Quinn spinoff Birds of Prey. The Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theatres on Aug. 6th, 2021. Are you looking forward to seeing Idris Elba as Deadshot?
