Gremlins Animated Series in the Works

After years of rumours about a potential Gremlins sequel / reboot, a strange Gremlins spin-off project seems to be taking shape over at Warner Brothers. WarnerMedia is the latest company planning to launch a streaming service and although there will be a big focus on their extensive back catalogue of movies they are also looking to develop exclusive original programming as well. We are hearing that of those original programs will likely be a Gremlins animated series. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. Television and Amblin Television are developing a Gremlins animated series as a potential original content for the upcoming WarnerMedia streaming platform. The show is described as “a period piece that would follow Mr. Wing, the Chinese grandfather played in the films by Keye Luke, as a young man as he goes on adventures with the friendly Mogwai Gizmo.” Tze Chun (Cold Comes the Night, Gotham) is attached to write and executive produce but no word on if Joe Dante or Chris Columbus are involved.

Last we heard, a Gremlins reboot was indeed moving forward and a script had been completed by Chris Columbus. He had described it as “dark and twisted” and it was reported to be following the Jurassic World formula, picking up 30 years after the original. It is unclear if that is still happening, but with the animated series being a prequel it sounds like they are leaving the door open to explore the future of the Gremlins timeline on the big screen. Do you have any interest in a Gremlins animated series?

I look forward to the coming Stream War. It will be interesting to see which services people keep and which ones they ditch. I’m down for more Gremlins, but not the animated kind.
