Tuesday Morning Box Office Report: Alita: Battle Angel Exceeds Low Expectations as Overall Box Office Struggles

It has been a pretty rough start to 2019 so far with just one movie (Glass) having hit $100 million domestic. Obviously January is always expected to be slow anyway, but President’s Day weekend in February has been a big moviegoing weekend in recent years. This year, the top 12 made just $109 million combined over three days, which is the worst President’s Day weekend since 2004. Alita: Battle Angel came out on top with $27.8 million over three days and over $40 million for the full five-day weekend, which is a bit better than expected. However, the movie still needs approximately $500 million just to break even so they’re going to be leaning heavily on the international box office in the coming weeks. In second place, The Lego Movie 2 added another $21.2 million while Isn’t It Romantic wooed Valentine’s Day crowds to open in third with $14.2 million. What Men Want fell to fourth while Happy Death Day 2U opened in fifth with just $9.8 million ($11 million over three days), which is a fair bit less than the original made. Given its thrifty $9 million budget, however, there is no cause for concern for Universal or Blumhouse.

1. Alita: Battle Angel — $27.8M
2. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part — $21.2M
3. Isn’t It Romantic — $14.2M
4. What Men Want — $10.9M
5. Happy Death Day 2U — $9.8M
6. Cold Pursuit — $6.0M
7. The Upside — $5.6M
8. Glass — $3.9M
9. The Prodigy — $3.2M
10. Green Book — $2.8M

I fucking hated that movie, but I guess I got suckered into watching it.

I don’t believe Blumhouse has ever lost money on a production. I remember reading an interview with Jason Blum where he said something like the small budgets are by design, based on what they have already calculated that they can recoup without the film being a wide release hit. Worst case scenario is they just break even. Why the hell doesn’t every studio function like this lol??
