Is the long overdue Eddie Murphy comeback finally about to happen? It seems like it might be closer than ever with Murphy poised to return to one of his most iconic big screen roles for his next major project. We are hearing this month that a Coming to America sequel is happening and they now have a new director on board to see it through. Hustle & Flow helmer Craig Brewer will reteam with Murphy after directing him in the upcoming blaxploitation biopic Dolemite Is My Name. Murphy had this to say about the announcement:
“After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward… We’ve assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite, and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.”
A sequel to John Landis’ 1988 classic (tentatively titled Coming 2 America) was announced back in 2017 with Jonathan Levine (50/50, The Night Before) attached to direct. Kenya Barris (Black-ish) is still working on a rewrite of the script, which finds Akeem learning about a long lost son and returning to America to meet his unlikely heir. Production is expected to start sometime this year. Unfortunately, there is still no word on Beverly Hills Cop 4. Are you looking forward to Coming 2 America?
