Monday Morning Box Office Report: Aquaman is Still King, Escape Room Surprises

The first weekend of 2019 was mostly an uneventful one at the multiplex, although the sole new theatrical release did surpass expectations. Aquaman continued to float at the top with another $30.7 million, bringing its worldwide total to an incredible $940 million. $1 billion is now clearly within reach for the movie and it is definitely one of the big reasons that Warner Brothers as a studio just had its best year ever at the box office. 2018 also set a new total box office record for all studios, although a large part of that was thanks to Disney. In second place, Sony’s Escape Room opened with $18 million, doubling its $9 million budget and sailing past industry predictions. Mary Poppins Returns dropped to third while Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse stayed in fourth, quietly slipping past Bumblebee. Elsewhere, The Grinch dropped out of the top 10 while Holmes & Watson tumbled all the way down to tenth place.
