With Christmas just a few days away, we’ve got an absolutely packed slate of big releases descending on theatres this weekend and a few more hitting on Christmas Day. The latest DCEU release Aquaman is leading the charge and could be looking at a $100+ million three day opening despite the relative failure of Justice League. It will face some strong competition from the weekend’s other blockbuster release, Bumblebee, while Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns will also be a big draw for family audiences and has already been doing solid business since Wednesday. Other major releases include Robert Zemeckis’s Welcome to Marwen starring Steve Carell (which is getting trounced by critics) and Second Act starring Jennifer Lopez. On Dec. 25th, the Will Ferrell / John C. Reilly comedy Holmes & Watson also arrives along with Adam McKay’s Vice. In select theatres, we have a handful of Oscar contenders doing their qualifying runs including Cold War, Destroyer and On the Basis of Sex. What will you be watching over the holidays?
