2018 Film Junk Junkers’ Choice Awards: Voting is Now Open!

Things are going to be a little slower than usual around here over the next week or so, but in the meantime, we’d like to invite you to take part in a little annual tradition we like to call… The Junkers’ Choice Awards! The way it works is that we nominate some movies in a handful of genres and then we turn it over to you to pick your favourites. Yes, a lot of these movies could technically fit into multiple categories, but we tried to group them in such a way as to keep each category competitive. You also have at your disposal write-in votes for the best movie of the year and also the biggest disappointment, so use them wisely. Sometime around January 1st we’ll tally up all of the votes and post the results here so we can argue about them some more. Now go ahead and cast your votes for the 2018 Junkers’ Choice Awards!

Should really have watched Roma before doing this, and Spidey-verse isn’t out here yet :/

  • Lior

I am so behind on current releases, I haven’t seen about 80 percent of these… basically the same thing every time the Film junk awards come up. Maybe I should start my own podcast to stay up-to-date.

  • Dirk Gently

If those Holiday Movies are the best we have to look forward to i think i’ll just shoot myself in the face instead!

Thanks for the Junkers Choice Sean. Always enjoy doing that each year.

I feel like American Animals should be added to a category. Thriller maybe, or even documentary?

  • Beat_C

voted! are foreign language movies always automatically excluded from all categroies except their own? was wondering because “roma” was not eligible in the best drama category.

  • Tim

Why isn’t Spiderverse under both Animated and Comic Book? It unarguably falls into both categories.

  • Sean

Movies only go under one category. No great reason why other than to spread around the love a bit. There are a lot of movies that fit under multiple categories this year.

(I had Spider-Verse under comic book movies originally but Frank talked me out of it. Blame him. :) )

  • Beat_C

oh i guess that answers my question below.

  • Deven Science

Looking at the comedy section really brought home how much comedies lagged this year. The best comedy of the year was a 3.5 out of 5.

  • Lori Cerny

Ooh, I forgot about that film.

  • Jameson

I debated listing Roma as my most disappointed but ultimately went with Suspiria. Such a let down, especially after Call Me By Your Name.

  • Nobody

It’s getting overshadowed by Roma, but Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Shoplifters would be my pick for foreign language film and I’m glad he’s at least getting some much-deserved attention for it. Jay has said he dislikes modern Japanese films before, but I think he would appreciate the work of filmmakers like Kore-eda, who show there’s still some good stuff from there.

Operation Red Sea has to be the most under-the-radar big action movie of the year. The only reason it didn’t get more attention is because it’s from China, because otherwise it’s a well-crafted, big blockbuster spectacle that’s taking cues from Western military action movies and retooling them for domestic audiences.

No slot for Aquaman as best comic book movie of 2018? Isn’t that Frank’s choice?

  • Sean

It was in our “Most Anticipated Holiday Release” category just because it was such a late release. It’s always tricky dealing with movies that most people haven’t had a chance to see yet.
