When it was first announced that Will Smith was going to play the Genie in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Disney’s Aladdin, most people assumed that he would be voicing a CG character. Surprisingly, however, that is not the case and although he was absent from the initial teaser trailer, this week EW has given us our first look at Smith in the film. He looks, well… like Will Smith with a ponytail and beard. Despite the decidedly non-magical appearance, I am curious to see what his performance will be like considering it has been described as “part Fresh Prince, part Hitch.” Aladdin also stars Naomi Scott, Mena Massoud, Marwan Kenzari and Billy Magnussen and it hits theatres on May 24th.
