Update: Just two days later, Kevin Hart has stepped down as the 2019 Oscar host.
After hosting the Academy Awards for the past two years and presiding over one of the biggest mishaps in Oscar history, Jimmy Kimmel made it known that he would not likely be returning to host the show for a third time. Although people can obviously change their minds on such matters, this week we can authoritatively say that Kimmel will not be back. In his place, Kevin Hart is stepping up to emcee the event for the first time in his career. He confirmed the rumours last night via Instagram:

For years I have been asked if I would ever Host the Oscars and my answer was always the same…I said that it would be the opportunity of a lifetime for me as a comedian and that it will happen when it’s suppose to. I am so happy to say that the day has finally come for me to host the Oscars. I am blown away simply because this has been a goal on my list for a long time….To be able to join the legendary list of host that have graced that stage is unbelievable. I know my mom is smiling from ear to ear right now. I want to thank my family/friends/fans for supporting me & riding with me all this time….I will be sure to make this years Oscars a special one. I appreciate the @TheAcademy for the opportunity ….now it’s time to rise to the occasion #Oscars
It is a welcome move by the Academy, especially in light of the continuing debate over diversity at the Oscars, but it’s also a smart one considering that Hart is one of the biggest comedians working today. I have no doubt that he will bring in new viewers just based on his presence alone. However, Hart also has an insanely packed schedule; among his upcoming projects is the sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle which is expected to start production early next year. Do you think Kevin Hart is a great choice to host the Oscars?
